Anti Spyware

SecuritySpyware is software installed on a computer without the user’s knowledge which gathers information about that user for later retrieval by whoever controls the spyware. Spyware can be broken down into two different categories, surveillance spyware and advertising spyware.

Surveillance software includes key loggers, screen capture devices, and Trojans. These would be used by corporations, private detectives, law enforcement, intelligence agencies, suspicious spouses, etc.

Advertising spyware is software that is installed alongside other software or via ActiveX controls on the internet, often without the user’s knowledge, or without full disclosure that it will be used for gathering personal information and/or showing the user ads.

Anti Virus

Issue:

Computer virus is a piece of malicious program which is able to affect the normal operation of a computer system; both of them may cause damage to the host. But there is at least one difference: computer viruses are created by human while biological viruses are not. When a virus strikes, the results range from merely annoying screen displays to disastrous and extensive data corruption. With the growing popularity of microcomputers, the threat of virus should definitely not be negligible.

Solution:

New viruses are being developed every day. New techniques may render existing preventive measures insufficient. The only truth in virus and anti-virus field is that there is no absolute security. However, we can minimize the damage by identifying virus infections before they carry out their payload. The following lists some ways to detect virus infections:

1. Gateway Level

  • Scans all major messaging protocols
  • Advanced Content Filtering
  • Policy-Based Control with extended Policy Support
  • Reporting

2. Desktop Level

  • Offload the Burden of Managing Anti-Virus
  • Centralized Management
  • Automatic Distribution of Virus Updates
  • Logging

Anti Spam

Issue:

Spamming is the scourge of electronic-mail and newsgroups on the Internet. It can seriously interfere with the operation of public services, to say nothing of the effect it may have on any individual’s e-mail mail system. Spammers are, in effect, taking resources away from users and service suppliers without compensation and without authorization.

Solution:

  • Use a separate email address when you post messages to any public forum.
  • Consider acquiring multiple email addresses for different purposes. This helps you to identify different sources and senders, and lets you filter more effectively.
  • Remove your email address from your website. If you list or link to your email address, you can expect to be spammed.
  • Filter your email. Using filters as key to managing your email effectively. It may take a short time to figure out how to do this, but it’s definitely worthwhile.
